How to Store Peptides — Refrigeration, Shelf Life, and Travel

By G1 Peptides · Medically reviewed by the G1 Peptides clinical team · Updated October 1, 2026 · 2 min read

THE SHORT ANSWER

Store peptides in the refrigerator at 2 to 8 °C, away from light, in the original vial or pen. Freeze-dried powder is the most stable form. Once a vial is mixed, use it within the beyond-use date on the pharmacy label and do not freeze it. If a peptide has been left out, ask the pharmacy before using it.

The short version

FormWhereHow long
Freeze-dried powder, unopenedRefrigerator, 2 to 8 °CUntil the date on the label
Mixed vialRefrigerator, 2 to 8 °CUntil the beyond-use date on the label
Prefilled penRefrigerator, 2 to 8 °CUntil the date on the label

In every case: keep it in its original container, upright, away from light, and not in the refrigerator door, where the temperature swings most.

Why powder lasts longer

Peptides break down in water. Freeze-drying removes the water, which is why vials ship as powder and why powder survives a day or two in transit. Once you add water, the clock starts. That is the reason to mix a vial only when you are ready to begin using it. See how to reconstitute peptides.

What the beyond-use date means

A compounding pharmacy assigns a beyond-use date under the standards for sterile preparations (USP 797). It reflects both how long the peptide stays stable and how long a multi-dose vial stays sterile once it has been punctured. After that date, discard what is left, even if it looks fine.

Signs a vial should not be used

  • The solution is cloudy, discoloured, or has particles in it.
  • The powder did not dissolve fully.
  • The stopper is damaged or the seal was broken on arrival.
  • It is past its date.

A clear solution is not proof that a peptide is still active. A peptide can lose potency without changing appearance, which is why dates matter.

Travelling with peptides

  • Carry them in an insulated pouch with a cold pack, and keep the vial from touching the ice directly.
  • Keep them in hand luggage. Aircraft holds can freeze.
  • Bring the pharmacy label or prescription, and keep syringes in their packaging.
  • Move them to a refrigerator when you arrive.

Pens

A prefilled pen is already in solution, so it is stored like a mixed vial from the day it arrives: refrigerated, capped, and never frozen. Remove the needle after each use so the pen does not leak or draw in air. See peptide pens vs. vials.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Do peptides need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Keep them at 2 to 8 °C, which is normal refrigerator temperature. Freeze-dried powder tolerates short periods at room temperature in transit, but mixed vials and pens should stay refrigerated.

How long do reconstituted peptides last?

Follow the beyond-use date on the pharmacy label. For a multi-dose vial mixed with bacteriostatic water it is commonly up to 28 days in the refrigerator, but the label for your product is what counts.

Can you freeze peptides?

Do not freeze a mixed vial or a pen. Freezing and thawing can damage the peptide. Unopened freeze-dried powder is sometimes stored frozen by pharmacies, but follow the label on yours.

What if my peptide was left out overnight?

Do not guess. Contact the pharmacy or your provider with how long it was out and how warm it got. They can tell you whether it is still usable.
